Lung Cancer - 62-year-old smoker

History
Patient is a 62-year-old smoker with a solitary nodule left lung, which has been biopsied. Biopsy results are not known at the time of the PET scan.

PET Findings
Whole body imaging from the base of the brain through the upper thighs is obtained. In the area of nodule in the left mid lung there is a hypermetabolic area with SUV value in the range of 4.5. The only other area of increased activity is in the right shoulder. This appears to be in the soft tissues near the rotator cuff. This highest SUV value in this area is 2.0. Mild hypermetabolic activity is seen in the left hip where previous hip surgery has been performed. This does not appear to be suspicious.

Impression
Hypermetabolic area in the area of the left lung nodule with elevated SUV values consistent with malignancy. Focal area of increased activity lateral to the right humeral head with a maximum SUV of around 2.0. I think that this is most likely chronic inflammation. There is no other evidence of metastatic disease or other abnormality. These results should be clinically correlated with the results of the needle biopsy.
